How Does the School System in Germany Work?
Confused by German schools? Learn how the school system works, from Kindergarten to Gymnasium and university, explained simply for newcomers to Germany.
How Does the School System in Germany Work?
Your child comes home with a letter from school. The letter uses words like "Gymnasium" or "Hauptschule". You don't understand them. Many newcomers feel the same way. The German school system looks complicated at first. This article explains the basics in simple steps.
Why Do Schools Differ Between German States?
Germany has 16 federal states. They are called "Bundesländer" in German. Each state runs its own school system. The federal government does not control schools directly.
Article 7 of the Grundgesetz (Basic Law) gives states the right to supervise schools. The Grundgesetz is the constitution of Germany. This is question 11 in the naturalization test.
Because of this rule, school types, school hours, and holidays differ between states. A family moving from Bavaria to Berlin may see a very different school system.
The Stages of School in Germany
Kindergarten
Kindergarten is for children up to about age 6. It is not compulsory. Many parents still send their children there. It helps children learn German before school starts.
Grundschule (Primary School)
Children usually start primary school at age 6. This is called "Grundschule". In most states, it lasts four years, from grade 1 to grade 4. In Berlin and Brandenburg, it lasts six years.
Secondary School
After Grundschule, students move to a secondary school. There are several types:
- Hauptschule: Ends after grade 9 or 10. Prepares students for vocational training.
- Realschule: Ends after grade 10. Prepares students for vocational training or further school.
- Gymnasium: Ends after grade 12 or 13. Prepares students for university.
- Gesamtschule: Combines all three paths in one school.
Teachers usually recommend a school type after grade 4. In most states, parents make the final decision.
Vocational Training (Ausbildung)
Many students choose vocational training after secondary school. This is called "Ausbildung". Students learn a job at a company. At the same time, they attend a vocational school, called "Berufsschule". This combination is called the "dual system".
University
Students with a Gymnasium diploma, called "Abitur", can go to university. Some Realschule students can also reach university later, through extra qualifications.
Is School Compulsory in Germany?
Yes, school attendance is compulsory. This is called "Schulpflicht". Each state sets its own rules by law. In most states, compulsory education lasts at least nine years. Parents who do not send their children to school can face fines.
The School System in Eastern Germany
Germany was divided into two countries until 1990. The Bundesrepublik Deutschland (West Germany) and the DDR (East Germany) became one state. The five eastern states joined the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. These states are Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Thüringen. This is question 201 in the naturalization test. How this happened is question 204.
When the DDR joined the Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the new states also joined the European Union. This is question 205 in the test. Today, all 16 states run their own school system. This includes the five eastern states.
What Happens If Something You Buy Is Broken?
School life also brings small everyday problems. For example, you buy a TV, and it doesn't work at home. In Germany, you can return it to the shop. This is called "reklamieren", meaning to complain about a faulty product. This is question 290 in the naturalization test. It shows how consumer rights work in daily life, not only in school.
