German School System Explained: Guide for Families
Not sure how the German school system works? This guide covers Grundschule, Gymnasium, Abitur, and vocational training — in plain English for families.
Understanding the German School System
You just moved to Germany with your children. You need to register them for school. But the German school system looks very different from what you know. This guide explains everything step by step.
The Basic Law and Schools
Education in Germany is regulated by each federal state (Bundesland). The Basic Law — Grundgesetz — sets the overall framework. Article 7 of the Grundgesetz says schools are under state supervision (Art. 7 GG).
This is why schools look different in every state.
BAMF Test, Question 11: What is Germany's constitution called? → The Grundgesetz (Basic Law).
Compulsory Schooling (Schulpflicht)
Every child in Germany must attend school. This is called Schulpflicht. It starts at age 6 and usually lasts until age 18. If your child skips school regularly, parents can face a fine.
The German School System Step by Step
Primary School: Grundschule
Children start Grundschule at age 6. It lasts four years (grades 1–4). In Berlin and Brandenburg, it lasts six years.
Children learn:
- Reading and writing in German
- Mathematics
- Basic science and nature studies
- Art, music, and sport
At the end of grade 4, teachers give a school recommendation. This suggests which type of secondary school fits your child best.
Secondary Schools: The Main Options
After Grundschule, students move to a secondary school. Germany has several types. The right school depends on grades and abilities.
Hauptschule
- Grades 5–9
- Ends with the Hauptschulabschluss
- Prepares students for vocational training
Realschule
- Grades 5–10
- Ends with the Mittlere Reife
- Opens doors to many apprenticeship programs
Gymnasium
- Grades 5–12 or 5–13 (varies by state)
- Ends with the Abitur
- The Abitur is required to study at a university
Gesamtschule (Comprehensive School)
- Combines all school types in one
- Students can still reach the Abitur
- Available in many states
Vocational Training: The Dual System
Germany is known for its dual system (duales Ausbildungssystem). Students train in a company and attend a vocational school (Berufsschule) at the same time. The training lasts 2–3 years. It leads to a recognized professional qualification.
Many young people choose this path. It is well-respected and leads to good jobs.
How German School Grades Work
German grades go from 1 to 6. Grade 1 is the best. Grade 6 means the student has failed. This is the opposite of many other countries.
| Grade | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 | Very good (sehr gut) |
| 2 | Good (gut) |
| 3 | Satisfactory (befriedigend) |
| 4 | Sufficient (ausreichend) |
| 5 | Poor (mangelhaft) |
| 6 | Insufficient (ungenügend) |
Schools in East and West Germany
Germany has 16 federal states (Bundesländer). Each state runs its own schools. Rules and structures differ across Germany.
After reunification in 1990, five eastern states joined the Federal Republic of Germany. These states had been part of the DDR (East Germany). Their names are: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, and Thüringen.
BAMF Test, Question 201: Which states belonged to the former DDR? → Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen.
The eastern states did not simply merge with West Germany. They officially joined (beigetreten) the Federal Republic of Germany.
BAMF Test, Question 204: How did East and West Germany become one country? → The five eastern states joined (beigetreten) the Federal Republic of Germany.
By joining Germany, they also became members of the European Union.
BAMF Test, Question 205: What else happened when the eastern states joined Germany? → They also became part of the European Union.
Today, schools in eastern states follow the same federal framework. But each state still makes its own school laws.
How to Enroll Your Child in School
To register your child, follow these steps:
- Find your local Grundschule — usually in your neighborhood.
- Bring these documents: birth certificate, proof of residence, vaccination records.
- Some schools require a school health check (Schuleingangsuntersuchung).
If your child does not speak German well, ask about DaZ classes (Deutsch als Zweitsprache — German as a second language). Many schools offer this support.
Your Consumer Rights When Buying School Supplies
As a parent, you buy many things for school — bags, tablets, books, and stationery. If something you buy is broken or faulty, you have rights in Germany.
Example: you buy a laptop for your child. At home, it does not work. You can go back to the shop and make a complaint (reklamieren). The shop must repair it, replace it, or give you a refund.
BAMF Test, Question 290: You buy a TV in Germany. At home, it does not work. What can you do? → You can make a complaint (reklamieren). This applies to all purchases — including school supplies.
