B1 German Certificate: Where to Take the Test

Need a B1 German certificate for citizenship? Learn which providers are accepted, where test centers are, and what § 10 StAG legally requires from you.

B1 German Certificate: Where to Take the Test

You need a B1 German certificate for your citizenship application. But where do you actually take this test? Many providers exist. Not all of them count for naturalization. This guide explains what you need and where to find a test center.

Why You Need a B1 Certificate

German citizenship law requires sufficient German language skills. This rule stands in § 10 Abs. 1 Nr. 6 StAG. The law defines "sufficient" in § 10 Abs. 4 StAG. It means level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GER).

You must prove this level with an official certificate. A self-assessment is not enough. The authority (Staatsangehörigkeitsbehörde) needs written proof.

Which Certificates Are Accepted

Not every language school issues a valid certificate. These are the main accepted options:

Certificate Issued by Typical location
Goethe-Zertifikat B1 Goethe-Institut Goethe-Institut branches
telc Deutsch B1 telc GmbH VHS, private language schools
ÖSD Zertifikat B1 ÖSD Licensed ÖSD exam centers
DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) BAMF End of an Integrationskurs

Goethe-Institut

The Goethe-Institut runs its own exam centers in many German cities. You can book the B1 exam directly online.

telc Deutsch B1

telc exams happen at many Volkshochschulen (VHS) and private language schools. This is often the cheapest and most common option.

DTZ Through an Integration Course

If you attend an Integrationskurs, you take the DTZ automatically at the end. This path is efficient. The course already prepares you for the exact test content.

What Does the B1 Exam Test?

The B1 exam checks four skills. Each provider tests them in a similar way.

  • Reading: You read short texts and answer questions.
  • Listening: You listen to short recordings and answer questions.
  • Writing: You write a short text, often an email or letter.
  • Speaking: You talk with a partner or the examiner about daily topics.

You need a passing score in all four parts. If you fail one part, some providers let you repeat only that part. Ask the test center about their specific rules.

Costs and Registration

Exam fees differ between providers and cities. telc and Goethe-Institut exams usually cost money directly. The DTZ inside an Integrationskurs is often subsidized or free, depending on your course funding.

Registration usually happens online or at the test center. You often need:

  • A valid ID or passport.
  • A completed registration form.
  • Proof of payment, if the exam is not free for you.

Waiting lists can be long before important deadlines. Register as early as possible.

Where to Find a Test Center

Start your search close to home. Here are three practical steps:

  1. Check your local Volkshochschule (VHS) website for exam dates.
  2. Search the Goethe-Institut or telc website for a location finder.
  3. Ask a BAMF-approved language school about upcoming B1 exam dates.

Larger cities usually offer test dates every few weeks. Smaller towns may have longer waiting times. Book early if you have a deadline.

B1 Certificate vs. Einbürgerungstest: Don't Confuse Them

The B1 certificate proves your language skills. It does not test your knowledge about Germany. A second, separate test exists for that.

This second test is the Einbürgerungstest. The legal basis is § 10 Abs. 1 Nr. 7 StAG. It requires knowledge of Germany's legal and social order.

The Einbürgerungstest uses a pool of questions. Here are five real examples from that pool:

  • Question 60: In Germany, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat belong to the … → Answer: the legislative branch (Legislative).
  • Question 74: What is the name of the parliament for all of Germany? → Answer: Bundestag.
  • Question 127: Why does Germany's election law have a 5% threshold? → Answer: Because many small parties would make it harder to form a government.
  • Question 134: Your bus line might get cancelled. What can you do to keep it? → Answer: Join or start a citizens' initiative (Bürgerinitiative) to save the bus line.
  • Question 138: What can you do if your employer fires you unfairly? → Answer: File a wrongful dismissal claim (Kündigungsschutzklage).

You need both certificates for your citizenship file: the B1 language certificate and the Einbürgerungstest certificate.

What to Do After You Pass

Keep both original certificates. Your Staatsangehörigkeitsbehörde will ask for them with your application. A copy alone is usually not enough.

If you already hold a German school diploma or a university degree taught in German, you may not need a separate B1 certificate. Ask your local authority to confirm this in your specific case.

Finding a test center is only the first step. The Einbürgerungstest itself needs preparation too.
